Meet the team – Retrica’s Android Developers Aren and Bob

Introducing the Android Team of Retrica: Aren and Bob!

Aren

Great to meet you Aren! How long have you been working at Retrica Inc.?

It has been almost two years since I became part of the amazing Retrica team. When I first arrive there were 9 people including me, I was the first android developer. My previous job as a developer was in a company called Think Reals, where I met Allan, Retrica’s server developer, he first introduced me to Retrica, and I thought it could be an exciting job opportunity for me: turned out it is!

Tell us more about your background! How did you become an Android developer?

I have always been interested in computer and math and I started coding in 2010, one year after my entrance at the department of Computer Science andEngineering at POSTECH (포스텍, Pohang University of Science and Technology).Truthfully, since I was a student I couldn’t afford Mac products therefore I started developing on Windows. Now I use a MacBook at work, but I still prefer Android!  In the future I would like to learn graphics, and image processing.

What is the greatest event that happened in Retrica?

Since April, the Android team gained a new member, Bob. Not being the only Android Developer anymore and have someone to share the workload and the same passion is the greatest event that could have happened. Bob is funny and energetic, and he makes the work environment more enjoyable. I can definitely say that I found a good friend in him.

Bob

Hi Bob! What is your typical day here at Retrica?

Hi guys, I am the Android developer of Discovery. Usually the first thing I do when I arrive at work is to check the coding I have done the day before and control if everything is fine. After I set up a To-Do List and discuss about it with my team. If everyone agrees I share my plan during the Daily (our company daily meeting) then after it starts the fun: coding and make Retrica come true.

Why did you decide to apply for Retrica’s job position?

Nice question. First of all for the variety of work this company offers, I can challenge myself with different coding and different area of the app that needs to be created. In addition, Retrica is a well know app and the result of my job is useful for million users: one second of my work is valuable for 1000 people, only by thinking about it I get goosebumps! For example after Retrica 5.0 came out, seeing people using Discover well and having fun in our platform made me very proud. I use Discovery too!

How is working with Aren?

Aren is one the best developer I have ever met, he knows very deeply about Android and he is very passionate about his work. We get well together, it is like working and having fun together with a friend, especially because Aren is surprisingly very humorous.

Aren and Bob, what would you like to say to our Android users?

Guys, use Discover and let us know how is your experience! If you have any trouble, suggestion or interest in this field send us an email! We will happily reply back to you.

Introducing @Mention!

Introducing @Mention!

Greetings Retricans!

Since Discover launched, we’ve seen you use it to connect and make friends from all corners of the world. As these friendships developed, it became more and more important to get the attention of one or more friends at a time.

So put down those signs, Mention is here!

What is @Mention?

Mentions are a great way to get the attention of someone on your friends list when you have a special message for them.

Mentioning someone makes their Retrica Discover @username a link to their profile. Tapping it once brings up a brief summary of their account and a second tap takes you to their profile.

When you mention a friend in a post, they’ll receive a notification so they can view and reply to your picture instantly.

Here’s how to Menton on Retrica Discover

It has always been our goal to make Retrica the simplest way to take photos, filter them and share online. With mentions, we’ve made it easier than ever to connect and share your special moments with those who matter the most.

5 Tips To Boost Your Retrica Profile

5 Tips To Boost Your Retrica Profile

Hey Retricans!

It continues to be an exciting time to be on Retrica! Discover has been positively bursting with selfies, videos and gifs from across the world. As we continue to grow, the questions have been rolling in, mainly about the #Featured user feed.  Some of the most frequent questions we have received are: “How do I grow my Retrica profile?” and “How do I get featured?”

While there is no sure way to hit the #Featured feed, here are some tips to take your Retrica profile to the next level and give you the best chance of making the Featured list.

#1 Be active!

Give yourself the best chance to succeed! That means creating and posting a lot of content.

These days, it’s common to scroll or tap through hundreds and hundreds of photos, videos, and other pieces of media a day. So, don’t be afraid to take and upload a morning bus commute photo, ice latte gif, lunchtime selfie, and 20 second dinner video review.

When people look at your profile, they’re much more likely to tap follow if they are met with pages of interesting content and not just three or four images posted randomly over the last few months.

#2 Develop your Theme

When building your profile on Discover, think about what it’ll look like to people visiting for the first time. One thing to try is to experiment with the same 3-4 filters for a week. Eventually, your profile will develop a distinct image and really stand out from the crowd.

For example, if you really love coffee, try to make a coffee post once a day along with your regular posts. You’ll start to attract like minded Retricans, and soon you’ll have a bustling community of coffee loving friends to share content with!

#3 Interact

Now that social media has become the collective term for ‘the internet’ it’s time to be…well…social!

If you didn’t know already, it’s possible to see who is sending you the most likes by tapping the ‘likes’ on your profile. If you notice someone new moving up the charts, why not send some love back their way? Liking other people’s content, making a sign or using on screen text to directly address a friend is a great way to build your network on Retrica.

#4 Use Retrica’s Tools

There are so many tools at your disposal on Retrica and we love to see you use them! There are now hundreds of sticker and stamp options for you to add a finishing touch to your latest post.

If you’re feeling a little more creative, the doodle option lets you show off your artistic skills and create your own artwork over any selfie you take with Retrica.

#5 GIF is In!

Boost your profile with some GIFs! They are easy to make but the result is super cool. Check out Sam and Steve, two of our developers, having some stuff with the GIF function.

GIFs will make your profile more dynamic, try them out!

Retrica Discover has brought people together from all over the world and with it, an insight into hundreds of millions of lives. We hope that with these tips, your Retrica profile will be an even more interesting insight into what makes you unique.

See you soon, featured-users-to-be!

Day In The Life

Day In The Life

Hi there! 안녕하세요! I’m Ron and I’m a UI and UX designer at Retrica!

My main role at Retrica is to look at how you use the app and make sure that using Retrica simple, intuitive, and most importantly, fun!

At Retrica a “normal” day doesn’t really happen too often. As a fast growing startup, working at Retrica requires everyone to wear multiple hats and be ready to jump on new tasks as they come up. Over the course of the day, I am assigned to a variety of ‘core’ tasks but things are usually pretty flexible.

To give you a better idea of how everything comes together, here’s a breakdown of my day during our latest Retrica New Version launch.

Morning Commute: 8:30 am

Commuting in Seoul is incredibly convenient. During rush hour, trains reliably arrive every 2 to 5 minutes. My commute in the morning is long and clocks in at just over an hour, but I’m usually lucky enough to get a seat and catch up on sleep on the commute into the office.

Our office is located at Samsung station a three-minute walk from exit 4

Fun Fact #1: Our office is often mistaken by pedestrians as a café. In order to deter any unexpected visitors we have a sign in front of the door that reads “We Are Not a Café!”

After making my coffee I make my way up the stairs to the second floor where my desk and the rest of the team are located.

Team Meeting: 11:40 am

Every morning we have a big team meeting where everyone comes together to share what they’re working on and what’s coming up.

Some employees aren’t native Korean speakers which leads to some funny translation and communication slip-ups!

Work: 10 am – 12 pm

The biggest agenda for today is the launch of our New Retrica version. My main goal is to make some last minute changes, stamp out any bugs and have the design ready to launch by the end of the day. Lots to do!

Time flies when you’re focused! I quickly scan the room and check with the other designers and we head off for lunch.

Lunch: 12 pm – 1:30 pm

Around our office, there are plenty of great restaurants in the area. Everything from Indian curry to Hamburgers and of course, traditional Korean options. The best thing about lunch at Retrica? It’s free!Retrica covers all lunch expenses up to ₩15,000 ($14) If you find yourself at the office late, they’re also happy to chip in to make sure you’re well fed before going home.

Fun Fact #2: If you’re feeling sleepy in the morning or just after a little too much lunch, don’t worry! Retrica also provide unlimited free coffee and snacks!

Work: 2 pm – 7 pm

As our submission deadline approaches, you can feel the intensity building. Before a new product launch, I’m usually busy making final adjustments so I don’t have time to be nervous.  After final checks with the development team, we are ready to go!

The team gathers and we all hit ‘submit’ together. It’s always the result of hard work and teamwork that makes these updates come together.

Commute Home: 8:00 pm

After the update goes live and is being downloaded by hundreds of thousands of Retricans all over the world, it’s time to head home. While the subway is the best option in the morning, I choose to take the bus home from Samseong Station. The reason being is that I like to sneak in an extra hour of sleep on the bus ride home and skip the busy subway!

I hope that this was an interesting insight as to what goes on behind the scenes at Retrica. If you’d like more information or have any specific questions please do not hesitate to leave a comment or contact me here at info@retrica.co
